The trees glistened with morning drew, each its own crystal of light.
Birds sang the sweet songs of morning.
And the sun fought the moon for the sky.
The ground was moist after last night’s rain, my feet sinking into it’s grasp as I ran.
I slowed as I neared the hunting grounds.
My prey lunged for its kill—a young deer—tearing into its flesh and devouring the animal with a fierce eagerness.
I watched him, his sleek black coat shimmering in the night, eyes the color of the evening sky.
He was beautiful, and I, was about to kill him.
Go for the throat, whispered a voice in my mind.
I lunged for him, fangs extended…
He attacked, his lean, muscular body flexing as he moved, preventing me from biting him.
He was fast, but he wasn’t fast enough.
I grabbed his muzzle, still dripping with the blood of his own recent kill, slowly exposing his supple throat.
We danced.
He snapped at me, sharp claws grazing my shoulder like feathers tickling my skin.
I wrestled him to the ground, teeth sinking hungrily into his soft flesh, throbbing with the sweet nectar of his blood as it filled me…strengthened me.
He fought a moment more; golden eyes filled with strength…life. And then…
He was still.
The wind blew, carrying the scent of his pack and the whisper of rain.
That was my first kill, but it wasn’t my last.
