Mind Games

“Shadows— they were fun to play with slippery gasses not quiet solid, but not quite liquid. easy to manipulate… …hard to escape.”  – Queen of Shadows ~ At first the room was white. Solid. Pallid. Empty. I stood there a moment, taking in my surroundings, figuring out an escape. Only there was none. I turned around, fear in my throat, adrenaline coursing through my veins . . . The door was gone. But it was just . . . “Hello?” I called, voice catching in my throat. With a wince I swallowed, my mouth dry, my tongue thick. Hello? I thought. What did she want with me? I’d heard stories about the Queen of Shadows, a women heard but never seen. It was said that those who heard her voice never lived to tell the tale. The soft pallid light danced, playing across their translucent skin and setting it aglow. “Dance with us,” they called, laughing gaily, silver eyes as bright as the moon glittering alluringly. I dipped behind the thin cotton of my curtain as the wind blew, my face hot. I wanted to join them. “Dance with us!” they sang, their voices like unfinished songs, lulling me towards them, pulling my heart like the strings of a guitar. “Come,” they pleaded, yet I kept my eyes closed. I couldn’t be fooled by their joyful play, for once I left the safely of my room, they would grab me and steal me away. Evil often did that…draped itself in the cover of night and presented itself as a peaceful thing. Evil often did that…appeared before you as your deepest wish, and hushed desire. Evil often did that…calling to you as the moon hung low, whispering its secrets, asking you to play. Evil often did that. I just hoped I would be …
